IPQ5018 | Wallys DR5018S VLAN Configuration Guide

1. Introduction

The Wallys DR5018S, powered by the Qualcomm IPQ5018 chipset, is widely adopted in industrial wireless networking environments.

In complex networks, VLANs (Virtual LANs) are essential for traffic isolation, refined management, and enhanced security.

This guide provides a step-by-step tutorial to configure Access VLANs and Trunk VLANs on the DR5018S.

2. VLAN Basics

Before diving into configuration, it’s important to understand a few key concepts:

▶ VLAN (Virtual LAN)

Logically segments a network to reduce broadcast domains and improve manageability.

▶ Access VLAN

Used for end devices such as PCs. Each port belongs to a single VLAN, and frames are transmitted without VLAN tags.

▶ Trunk VLAN

Used for interconnecting devices such as switches or APs. A single port can carry multiple VLANs, and frames are tagged accordingly.

✅ In short: Access mode is for end-user devices, while Trunk mode is for device-to-device connections.

3. Prerequisites

Before configuration, ensure the following:

▶ A Wallys DR5018S router (running Wallys firmware)

▶ Admin access via Web GUI or SSH

▶ A planned VLAN ID scheme and IP addressing plan

▶ (Optional) A VLAN-capable NIC or managed switch for testing

4. VLAN Configuration on DR5018S

Steps:

1.Log in to the Web GUI.

2.Go to System → Services. Left the Enable NSS uncheck and click “save and apply”

3.Go to Network → Vlans.Create a VLAN (e.g., VLAN 2000).

4.Edit the ath1(the working radio) and eth0(the ethernet port connected) port mode to Trunk.

5.ath1 setting:Select type Trunk,Assign the PVID as 1,select Vlans 2000,save changes

6.ath1 setting:Select type Trunk,Assign the PVID as 1,select Vlans 2000,save changes.

7.Assign an IP address to the VLAN interface (static or DHCP).

8.Save and apply the configuration.

9.Test connectivity: connect a PC to the port, get an IP, and ping the radio.

5. Troubleshooting

▶ Unable to access the device → Verify VLAN ID, PVID, and tagging configuration

▶ Trunk traffic loss → Check that the remote device (switch or AP) has matching VLAN settings

▶ PC cannot ping → Ensure the assigned IP belongs to the correct VLAN subnet

▶ Performance issues → Review NSS hardware acceleration status

6. Conclusion

By following these steps, you can easily configure both Access VLANs and Trunk VLANs on the Wallys DR5018S.

In industrial wireless networking, VLANs provide:

▶ Traffic isolation – ensuring different services remain independent

▶ Improved security – minimizing potential attack surfaces

▶ Optimized performance – reducing broadcast domains and enhancing efficiency

With the powerful Qualcomm IPQ5018 at its core, the Wallys DR5018S delivers flexible and efficient VLAN management for enterprise and industrial networks.
